GEO contract expires Feb. 1; talks continue

The University and the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO), which represents about 1,700 graduate student instructors, are engaged in negotiations to develop a new labor contract. The current agreement expires Feb. 1.

Bargaining began in November and continues twice a week during the winter term. Numerous issues are under discussion, including salary, benefits, nondiscrimination and childcare.

If the contract is not settled by the deadline, both sides may agree to an extension or GEO may choose to work without a contract while bargaining continues. In either instance, basic provisions such as salary and benefits would continue at the current levels until a new agreement can be reached.

The University will post updates on the status of bargaining and issues under discussion to its Web site, http://www.umich.edu/~urel/gsi-sa/index.html.
