Forum to gauge U-M interest in ethics

A campus-wide forum will be hosted Feb. 7 by the Ethics in Public Life Task Force, a committee appointed by President Mary Sue Coleman as one of four presidential initiatives announced in September.

The forum will be held at 6 p.m. in the Hussey and Vandenberg Rooms of the Michigan League.

It will be a key event to help the presidential task force "gauge the perceived needs of teaching and learning at the University in regard to ethics, particularly ethics in public life," says Marvin Krislov, vice president and general counsel. Krislov is co-chair of the task force along with John Chamberlin, professor of political science and of public policy.

At the forum, faculty, staff and students will have an opportunity to voice their ideas and opinions through focus groups and directed discussion questions.

Jason Mironov, president of Michigan Student Assembly, sees the work of the task force as a collaborative effort to make the University a world leader in the study of ethics in public life. "This forum is a great opportunity for students and faculty to come together to make Michigan a leader in yet another field," he says.

Ethical issues have taken on a special significance in recent years with public scandals such as numerous leadership failures at large corporations, Mironov says.

One of the major goals of the task force is to provide a set of recommendations to Coleman by the spring as to whether a center for ethics in public life should be established at the University, Krislov says.

The forum should help the task force understand whether members of the University community are interested in developing such a center.
