UMHS again ranked among nation's top hospitals

The U-M Health System (UMHS) has retained its position among the best hospitals in the nation and again is the only hospital in Michigan to make the honor roll of "America's Best Hospitals" in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings.

UMHS was 11th in the country—the same level achieved last year—ranking it on the magazine's honor roll of the 16 best hospitals on a list of 176 of the nation's top medical centers.

Sixteen UMHS specialties also received high marks. Three specialties were in the top 10: ear, nose and throat (4th), cancer (9th) and geriatrics (9th).

Several specialties moved up from 2004: ear, nose and throat, from 5th in 2004 to 4th in 2005; rehabilitation, from 12th to 11th; digestive disorders, from 13th to 11th; orthopedics, from 23rd to 15th; and heart and heart surgery, from 19th to 18th.

"Every day, I have the pleasure of working with some of the nation's most skilled and dedicated health care professionals. Our faculty and staff ensure that we continually strive for the highest levels of patient care," says Larry Warren, executive director and chief executive officer of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers. "It is rewarding that their efforts have been acknowledged amongst the best academic centers in the country."
