Virginia Allen

Virginia Allen, former vice chancellor for student services and enrollment management at U-M-Flint, died June 24 in her home after a long and courageous battle with a variety of health concerns. She was 56.

At U-M-Flint, Allen was a member of Chancellor Juan E. Mestas' leadership team from 1995 until her retirement in 2004. Mestas says she was an effective manager of areas under her direction—areas he deemed critical to the well being of the students and the effectiveness of the institution.

"I will always remember and cherish Virginia's intelligence, her wisdom and sage counsel, and her sincere commitment to the students and the University," Mestas says. "She was an esteemed colleague and friend. The University community will miss her."

Allen earned her bachelor's degree in English at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and began her academic career as an English teacher. She went on to earn her master's and doctoral degrees from Wayne State University. Allen served as assistant vice president of academic affairs at Oakland University, and as a director of the Academic Counseling Center at Mercy College of Detroit.

Allen's husband, Chris, daughter, Ayanna, and son, Christopher, survive.

Memorial donations may be made in honor of Allen for student scholarship assistance at U-M-Flint. Donations should be sent to the Office of Institutional Advancement, 213 University Pavilion, Flint, MI, 48503.—Mel Serow, U-M-Flint
