Uniquely Michigan Web site celebrates U-M community

Launched last month, Uniquely Michigan is a Web site dedicated to connecting the University community with a growing compendium of information resources, tips, trivia, services and enrichment options.

The site, http://www.umich.edu
/~hraa/um
, is designed to provide a roadmap embracing the enormity and intellectual breadth of the University by highlighting the range of activities, support services, discounts and other entitlements available to members of the community.

Profiles of U-M employees who take advantage of these resources and share their enthusiasm for them also are spotlighted in stories linked to each of the site's major content areas—"Deals," "Entertainment," "Attractions," "Learning," "Whole Health," and "Miscellania." Pages highlighting children's activities ("Kids Stuff"), Michigan lingo ("UM-isms"), and fun facts about Michigan alumni, inventions and research discoveries ("Did U Know") add to the mix of information available on the site.

Chief Human Resource Officer Laurita Thomas sees the Uniquely Michigan site as an assembly of many elements that add value to the University as a great place to work.

"Faculty, staff and families connected to the U-M community now have a comprehensive, interactive, easy-to-use tool that puts the University's vast range of resources for healthy lifestyles, services, recreation, and opportunities for intellectual and cultural enrichment at their fingertips," Thomas says. "This is a tremendous resource for building and sustaining community and strengthening awareness of all that is great about our University."

The Uniquely Michigan site is an outgrowth of the Building Great Places to Work initiative—a resource for sharing ideas and tools to improve the workplace environment. Building Great Places to Work focuses on enhancing local work climates in order to support effective individual contributions to the work environment.

It also supports operating units in examining the quality of their work environments and creating climates characterized by mutual respect, openness and good will.
