An energy prototype on North Campus is testing a solar chimney system that will be used when construction on the Michigan Solar House begins later this spring. Faculty members and students from the Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning and other units will build the house for entry in the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Solar Decathlon. U-M will compete against 17 other colleges and universities to design and build a house that demonstrates the advantages of a solar lifestyle. In the fall, the teams will transport their houses to Washington, D.C., where they will be part of a solar village on the National Mall. (Photo by Paul Jaronski, U-M Photo Services) |
