ITCS offers improved servicesA major e-mail upgrade of both software and hardware took place in late August and has resulted in big changes for the better in Information Technology Central Services' (ITCS) e-mail service, such as larger mailboxes (200 MB). The upgrade makes it possible to implement other improvements in the future, such as optional spam filtering. More information about spam filtering will become available in upcoming weeks. As a result of the improvement, some e-mail programs need to be upgraded or reconfigured. Please see http://www.itcs.umich.edu/itcsdocs/s4321/. There also have been significant changes to the Basic Computing Package (BCP), including, for example, no charge for statewide MichNet dial-in access and an increase in IFS home directory size from 50 MB to 1 GB. For additional information see http://www.itcs.umich.edu/bcp2004/. To ensure your personally owned computer is as secure as it can be, ITCS urges XP users to install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. Microsoft has provided discs with Service Pack 2 at no charge so you can install it as soon as possible on your personal computer. Discs for shared use are being provided to departmental IT staff. They also are available at the U-M Computer Showcase and will be available for three-day checkout at the reserve desks at Shapiro Undergraduate Library (University Reserves and Science Library Reserves), Taubman Medical Library, and Art, Architecture and Engineering Library. For computers that are owned by the University, please check with your departmental computer support staff. As always, ITCS urges users to keep their computers protected with the latest antivirus software. Software for Windows computers and for Macintosh OS 9 is available to members of the U-M community for download at http://www.itcs.umich.edu/virusbusters/virusscan-download.html. Some U-M units use other antivirus products; always follow the recommendations of your local IT staff. In other IT-related news: • Telephone numbers for students living in University Housing Residence Halls and Northwood Single Student Housing have changed. The phone numbers in these locations now use the 565 exchange. Telephone numbers in the Lawyer's Club and Northwood Family Housing have not changed. The 565 exchange is a campus exchange; however, it requires a different dialing pattern than other campus numbers because there is a 615 exchange on campus. For detailed instructions on dialing to or from this exchange, see • The U-M Wireless Network, available to U-M students, faculty and staff, is adding new locations on campus.
