News BriefsDepression Center, MIRA honor sportswriter The Depression Center and the Mental Illness Research Association have presented the annual National Media Award to Eric Adelson, a reporter for ESPN The Magazine. The award recognizes a reporter or editor whose work has helped to decrease the stigma associated with mental illness. Adelson's June 2003 story called "Strong Side" profiled John Howell, safety for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who successfully battled depression. Humanities Council honors two U-M projects The Michigan Humanities Council selected two U-M projects among its 30 "Outstanding Humanities Projects" funded by the council during its 30-year history. The Huron Shores Summer Writing Institute, a summer writing workshop for at-risk youth in Rogers City, was produced with the assistance of U-M faculty in 1986-87. "Porgy & Bess: An American Voice," a video documentary of the famous opera, was produced by U-M Video Archives and broadcast nationally on PBS in 1998. The council selected projects that demonstrate the diversity, quality, historical and cultural content, and community impact of its grants program over the years. The council has funded more than 1,500 projects since 1974. A 30th anniversary celebration will be held at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Sept. 30. More Stories
