United Way campaign exceeds goal

The U-M United Way campaign has concluded having exceeded its goal. Nearly 3,000 University employees have pledged more than $875,000 to aid health and human service needs throughout our community.

Campaign co-chairs Dr. Robert Kelch and Marvin Krislov had set a campus goal of $850,000 and say they were pleased to see the University community once again demonstrate great compassion with donations.

"Despite the efforts directed at hurricane relief and the tough Michigan economy, our fellow employees recognized the dramatic ongoing needs right in our own community and have once again graciously lent their support," says Krislov, vice president and general counsel for the University.

A total of 303 University employees joined the ranks of the Leadership Givers Association, with gifts that exceeded $1,000—an increase of 16 percent over last year's total. Kelch, executive vice president for medical affairs and U-M Health System CEO, expressed his appreciation for these gifts: "Leadership giving from University personnel continues to make a substantial difference in the ability for local agencies to provide needed services."

The campaign also featured departmental level competitions to determine which units pledged the most, had the greatest participation and donated the most per capita among donors in their unit.

The top five departments for total giving were: Stephen M. Ross School of Business, $36,773; Pathology, $17,826; Radiology, $14,984; Athletics, $14,340; and Medical School Administration, $13,478.

The top areas in terms of participation in the campaign among departments with five or more employees were: Office of Vice President and Secretary of University, 100 percent; Vice President for Government Relations, 100 percent; Recruitment & Personnel Planning, 80 percent; University Development, 80 percent, and Development Corporation/Foundation Relations, 71 percent.

The per capita or average gift per donor in a unit honors went to the Office of the President, $1,677.50; Internal Medicine-Cardiology, $1,491.43; Internal Medicine-Molecular, $1,260.71; Athletics, $1,195; and Obstetrics and Gynecology, $1,085.
