Photo: ScholarPOWER banquet honors
engineering student achievement

Tom Stephens, General Motors Powertrain Group vice president and U-M-Dearborn alumnus, delivers opening remarks at the College of Engineering (CoE) ScholarPOWER Academic Awards Banquet Feb. 1. Stephens, who earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 1971, said a diverse talent pool is important for companies operating in a global economy. The ceremony, titled, "Powerful Beyond Measure," saluted academic excellence among underrepresented minority engineering students and paid tribute to those who have earned exemplary standing or shown substantially improved performance. More than 200 honorees were recognized for undergraduate, rising, new student, master's or doctoral achievement. ScholarPOWER, coordinated by the CoE Minority Engineering Program Office, supports student services that provide training for academic, personal and professional development.
