Dr. Robert Kelch, executive vice president for Medical Affairs and U-M Health System (UMHS) chief executive officer, unveils the 16-foot Dragon of Wishes Hopes and Dreams dedicated to patients, visitors, faculty and staff at University Hospital. The dragon is adorned with more than 1,700 paper fans. The joint School of Art & Design (SoAD) and UMHS Gifts of Art project commemorates the 20th anniversary of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers (UMHHC). The fans, representing the scales of the dragon, display messages from patients, including a short musical score written from grandfather to granddaughter from his hospital bed. Others contain intricate pictures depicting hopes of doctors and nurses for their patients' recoveries. Joining Kelch at the July 11 unveiling were SoAD student Jeff Pulker, behind Kelch; Professor Anne Mondro, who made the dragon; SoAD Associate Dean Mary Schmidt; and UMHHC Interim Director & CEO Doug Strong.
