David Sherman, the John G. Searle Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and a Life Sciences Institute research professor, is a member of a group of researchers that recently received $3.5 million from the National Institutes of Health as part of the International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) program. Sherman will be one of several deep-sea divers exploring natural compounds that could lead to new treatments for cancer and neurodegenerative, infectious and tropical diseases. Samples collected from upcoming expeditions to Costa Rica and other areas will be tested for their potential as pharmaceuticals in the Center for Chemical Genomics, headed by Sherman, as well as, Harvard Medical School, the Broad Institute and Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research.
