New look for University Gateway

The U-M Gateway, the University's home page, is sporting a new design, the first new look since the current Gateway went live four years ago.

The new design takes advantage of advances in Web technology to create a site that is quicker to download and easier for the University Gateway Team to maintain. The new look and feel are in line with current trends in Web design.

The overall Gateway content and organization have not been altered. The basic navigational structure has been retained, including the rollover menus and the tabs that identify the pages intended for specific audiences, such as current and prospective students. The design adds one new item to the main navigation bar, "Schools, Colleges, & Departments," in order to provide a more intuitive pointer to material that used to be found by clicking on "Academic Units," under "Academics and Research."

The page design makes it possible to accommodate varying amounts of content under a number of categories, solving constraints that were encountered in the previous design. For example, the new design makes it possible to increase or decrease the number of items found in the news section and Michigan Focus, depending on need.

The redesign also reflects improved attention to accessibility, greater visibility for the "Featured Site" and more space for rollover menus.

The new page was designed by Marketing Communications.
