Regents to hold hearings on certification
of U-M-Dearborn public safety officers

The Board of Regents will conduct public hearings at the Dearborn campus in December to consider whether to certify some of the campus public safety officers, allowing them to take on greater law enforcement powers and responsibilities.

The hearings will be held 9-10:30 a.m. Dec. 5 in Room 1030 of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters Building at U-M-Dearborn; and 7-8:30 p.m. Dec. 8 in Room 1400 in the Social Sciences Building.

U-M-Dearborn is one of only two public universities in the state that does not have certified law enforcement officers.

"Over the past several years, we have had many discussions among faculty, students and staff around the issue of enhancing the safety of the campus community through seeking certification for some safety officers," says U-M-Dearborn Chancellor Daniel Little.

The public hearings scheduled at the Dearborn campus are required by the state law governing the certification of safety officers at public universities.

"After long consideration and deliberation, we decided to recommend to the U-M Regents that this campus join the overwhelming majority of other public universities in Michigan and adopt a certification program for some of our campus safety officers," Little says.

Members of the public who wish to address comments to the Regents at the hearing must register in advance by e-mail to public.comments@umich.edu or by phone to (734) 763-5553. Requests to speak will not be accepted at the event. The deadline for signing up to speak at the first hearing is noon Dec. 2, and for the second hearing, noon Dec. 7.

When registering by e-mail those planning to speak should include their name, affiliation (faculty, student, staff, or organization name), phone number, e-mail address, and which hearing they plan to attend. Comments will be limited to 5 minutes each.

Regents also will accept comments in writing sent by fax to (734) 763-8011 or mailed to Room 2014, Fleming Administration Building, Ann Arbor MI 48109-1340.
