Poet Mark Doty presents Day With(out) Art/World AIDS Day Reading

The Museum of Art will present acclaimed poet Mark Doty reading selections from his poetry and prose at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Museum in observance of the 17th annual Day With(out) Art on World AIDS Day.

Doty is the author of six celebrated collections of poems, including "Atlantis," which received the Ambassador Book Award, the Bingham Poetry Prize, and a Lambda Literary Award; and "My Alexandria," which was chosen by Philip Levine for the National Poetry Series and won the National Book Critics Circle Award and Britain's T. S. Eliot Prize.

He has also written "Heaven's Coast: A Memoir," which won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Nonfiction, and "Firebird," an autobiography.

This event is sponsored by the Lloyd Hall Scholars Program, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, Women's Studies Program, and the Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender Affairs. The museum is at 525 S. State St.




Tickets on sale for annual performances of Handel's "Messiah"

The University Musical Society (UMS) Choral Union and Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra return at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 to Hill Auditorium for the annual performances of Handel's "Messiah."

The performance is led by UMS Choral Union music director Jerry Blackstone and features outstanding soloists: soprano Karina Gauvin; countertenor Bejun Mehta; tenor Robert Breault; and baritone Andrew Garland.

The UMS Choral Union has been performing "Messiah" annually since UMS's founding in 1879. When UMS started performing "Messiah" concerts in 1879, such performances were rare. Today, "Messiah" is the sacred sign of the season for almost every community.

This year, a 220-voice chorus is slated to perform the oratorio.
