Photo: Peace Corps celebration

To commemorate the 45th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's announcement of his idea for the Peace Corps, Deputy Director Judy Olsen thanks the University for taking the charge and making volunteerism an immediate campus and national movement. Speaking on the steps of the Michigan Union a few feet from the spot where Kennedy made his historic announcement Oct. 14, 1960, Olsen presented the University with a peace pole, installed just south of the Union, to commemorate the occasion. With 85 current volunteers and more than 2,000 alumni, U-M annually ranks among the top schools sending students to the corps. U-M Vice President for Student Affairs E. Royster Harper introduced Olsen and gave a brief history of the Peace Corps. (Photo by Scott Galvin, U-M Photo Services)
