Photo: Class of '45 celebrates NROTC anniversary

The U-M Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp celebrated its 60th anniversary Oct. 22 with a reunion of the 1945 class from the U.S Navy's V-12 officer commissioning program. Pictured with reunion class members are, in the foreground, Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Owens, and U.S. Navy and Rear Admiral (retired) Lee Landis, a V-12 graduate from Union College who was guest speaker at the ceremony. From July 1943-June 1946, more than 60,000 Navy and Marine Corps officers were commissioned through the V-12 program. The program's effect was felt on the U-M football field, as many Wolverine players on the 1943 team were V-12 participants. "The V-12 program was an important part of the United States war effort during the challenging times of World War II," Owens said. "It is important for us to now remember and honor their efforts."
