University remains high on listBolstered by top-10 showings from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the College of Engineering (CoE), U-M again is ranked highly by U.S. News & World Report in its latest list of "America's Best Colleges." The University has been ranked in the top 3 of public universities and the top 25 nationally for many years, and 2005 is no different. U-M is tied with UCLA on the list of the best public universities, on which both are ranked 3rd, and in the category of best national universities, where the two are tied at 25th. The Ross School of Business tops the management specialty, up from 2nd last year. Overall, the Ross School remained tied for 3rd with the University of California, Berkeley, among undergraduate programs nationally. In other specialties, the business school remained 2nd in marketing and in the top five in four other categories (finance, 3rd; international business, 3rd; accounting, 4th; and production/operations, 5th). The engineering undergraduate program tied with Georgia Tech for 6th nationally, up from 7th last year. CoE resides in the top five in six specialties (industrial/manufacturing, 2nd; environmental/environmental health, 2nd; aerospace/aeronautical, 3rd; materials, 3rd; mechanical, 3rd; and electrical, 5th). U-M-Dearborn ranks 29th for Midwest universities and 6th among public schools in the Midwest with a master's degree as its highest offering. U-M-Flint tied for 76th in the Midwest. The engineering program at U-M-Dearborn held its No. 21 ranking in the Midwest. The Dearborn campus also ranks 4th in industrial/manufacturing programs. U-M also garnered recognition from U.S. News & World Report in three categories of programs to look for: first-year experiences, learning communities and service learning. "This gratifying recognition of the accomplishments of our faculty and students is something of which we can all be proud," former Provost Paul N. Courant says. "As pleased as we are with this recognition, however, I think it important to recall that no simple set of statistics can capture adequately the nuanced strengths and weaknesses of a large and complex institution like U-M. "This University offers a combination of scale, scope and excellence that few institutions in the world can match. Our students have opportunities to interact with faculty and other students from across the University, and the value of collaborations across wide-ranging disciplines cannot be captured by evaluations of individual programs."
