  Candace J. Johnson Award
Nominations sought for enthusiastic, excellent staff

The Office of the Provost again will recognize exemplary staff on the Ann Arbor and U-M Health System campuses with the Candace J. Johnson Staff Award for Excellence.

Established in 2004, the award is a memorial to a dedicated staff member, Candy Johnson. Her special blend of professionalism and personality was a positive influence in the workplace, say her co-workers. Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate and recognize peers who make a difference at the University through a combination of enthusiasm and excellence.

"Candy Johnson made everyone around her feel like they had a friend, and made everyone's work easier and more enjoyable," former Provost Paul N. Courant said of Johnson, who died in 2003. "Everyone misses her and we count ourselves lucky to have known her."

The Office of the Provost presents a $500 cash prize and certificate in December to the recipient or recipients. The nomination deadline is Oct. 10.

Three recipients were chosen to receive the award in 2004: Shirley Culliton, an executive secretary in the School of Information; Cora Horgrow, a nurse's aide in the 4West perinatal unit at the U-M Health System; and Pablo LaValle, a laboratory/classroom services supervisor in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
