Campbell's role will be to work with the leadership of the Health System to set its strategic direction and coordinate its planning efforts. He will retain the responsibilities he had in his former position as director of contracting for UMHS.
"Tom is the ideal person to help ensure that the U-M Health System is moving forward in the right direction in terms of our planning and business development efforts," says Dr. Robert Kelch, executive vice president for medical affairs and chief executive officer of the Health System. "This is a particular challenge during a time when there is a strain on the Michigan economy and health care in general, but I am confident that Tom is up to the challenge."
Campbell has served as director of contracting since 1994. In that time, he developed and implemented successful strategies with payers, physician groups, and other hospitals to increase and maintain patient activity at the Health System.
He also has been a key part of improvements in other business processes, and has served as one of the lead negotiators for UMHS during negotiations of the sale of the M-CARE managed care organization to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
Prior to becoming director of contracting, Campbell was manager of operations and financial analysis for the Medical School, and assistant manager and senior analyst of financial planning and decision support for the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers. He holds a bachelor of accounting degree from Michigan State University.
"I am looking forward to exploring the various ventures that will expand on and enhance the strong reputation and relationships that the U-M Health System has developed," Campbell says.
"My goal is to leverage our strong brand in a way that creates solid opportunities for UMHS and for our business partners."
Campbell also is a board member of the Washtenaw Health Plan, an organization dedicated to serving the needs of the indigent, and chairman of the board for the Michigan Dialysis Services, a joint venture between UMHS and the Renal Research Institute.
