Don't Miss
Benefits for immigrants issue addressed"Should Government Services and Benefits be Provided to Permanent Residents and/or Undocumented Immigrants?" is the theme of the Ethics in Public Life Forum from 7-9 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Pendleton Room at the Michigan Union.
This is the third public forum in the 2006-07 academic year. The series is presented by the President's Ethics in Public Life Initiative and co-sponsored by the LSA Theme Year on Citizenship.
Currently, federal and state laws draw some distinctions between citizens, permanent residents, and undocumented immigrants. Access to and benefits from programs in health care, education and welfare vary among these groups.
Recently there have been calls by some public officials and advocacy organizations to sharpen the lines between the groups. At the same time, others have called for expansion of access and benefits. This forum will bring together faculty experts and political leaders to examine the issue from a variety of political, economic, and ethical perspectives.
There will be a moderated panel presentation followed by a question and answer session.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
