A collection of essays, "The History of Michigan Law," co-edited by Martin Hershock, associate professor of History at U-M-Dearborn, has received the State History Award from the Historical Society of Michigan. This is the highest recognition presented by the state's official historical society and oldest cultural organization. This collection tells the story of the state's development from a territorial outpost to global economic powerhouse in the 19th and 20th centuries and its role as a center of organized labor and progressive movements.

Patricia Wittkopp, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, has been awarded a three-year $450,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to identify the genetic basis of body color differences within and between species of fruit flies.

The Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards committee of the American Heart Association has announced that late U-M Head Football Coach Glenn Edward "Bo" Schembechler has been named the 2007 winner of its Lifetime Achievement Award.
