U-M Celebrates 10-year anniversary as Energy Star Partner

Food and information will be available from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. July 24 on the Diag, to celebrate 10 years of partnership between the University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Buildings Program.

Staff from the energy management section of the Plant Operations Department invite the community to join the celebration, which features informational displays with details about what's been accomplished over 10 years. Two licensed mobile food vendors will be on hand to provide free food for those willing to test their knowledge of the partnership with a three-question quiz. (Answers will be in the displays.)

Ten years ago, U-M signed an agreement with the EPA that it would implement energy efficient facility upgrades and practices to prevent the creation of air pollution, solid waste, and other environmental impacts of energy production, distribution, and consumption. All general fund buildings have completed the Energy Star program, which includes mechanical and lighting system upgrades that help to save energy, prevent pollution and lower operating costs.

More than 216 energy-efficient projects have been implemented in general fund buildings since the partnership began in 1997. The estimated annual energy cost savings due to these projects is more than $4.6 million.
