Helmuth served since 2002 at Niagara University, N.Y., as the dean for the College of Business Administration with 23 faculty and 750 undergraduate and graduate students. During his administration, the university received a $5 million gift—the largest in its history—that will serve as the catalyst for new facilities construction.

Some of Helmuth's accomplishments include establishment of an externally funded Family Business Center, dedicated to serving the needs of family and privately owned businesses in western New York and southern Ontario through the exchange of knowledge. His efforts in internationalization of the school have been noteworthy as well, with the establishment of a formal relationship with the business school at the University of Padua, Italy, the second oldest university in Europe; relationships in Asia and Africa; Niagara's International Accounting Conference; and the North American Mobility Program.

Prior to his appointment at Niagara, Helmuth served from 1996-2002 at U-M-Dearborn as chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance and as acting assistant dean. He also served as an associate professor of finance and the chair of finance discipline at Rochester Institute of Technology from 1978-96.

Helmuth's research includes three books, one book review, more than 25 journal publications, more than 25 presentations of papers, and numerous chaired sessions.

"Dr. Kay and I are extremely pleased that Dr. Helmuth is assuming the deanship of the School of Management," said acting provost Vahid Lotfi. "We are confident that he will bring fresh ideas, innovative programs, enhance continued internationalization in the school, build collaborations with the local and regional business communities, and work with the faculty and staff in sharing the vision of the school and University together."

Both Kay and Lotfi expressed their appreciation to Doug Moon for his leadership as dean of the School of Management since 2003.

Helmuth's appointment is expected to be effective July 1.
