Taylor to chair Board of Regents; White co-chairRegent S. Martin Taylor will serve as the next chair of the Board of Regents for a one-year term beginning July 1, current Chair Olivia Maynard announced during the June 21 regents meeting. Katherine White will serve as vice-chair. Taylor, a Democrat from Grosse Pointe Farms, was elected to the board in 1996 and re-elected in 2004. White, a Democrat from Ann Arbor, was elected to the board in 1998 and re-elected in 2006. Regents bylaws state that the chair and vice chair are to be appointed based on seniority, and the vice chair automatically succeeds to the position of chair. Primary duties of the chair include: setting the annual schedule of meetings, agenda and major topics for presentation or study by the board; monitoring committee agenda planning for coordination and comprehensiveness; acting as spokesperson and convener of the board, when appropriate; presiding over executive sessions when held without the president; and appointing the chair and members of the ad hoc and standing committees. If the president is unable to attend a public meeting or must be out of the room during any part of the meeting, the chair will preside. If the chair is unable to perform the duties, the vice chair will assume them. The chair appoints leaders of the Personnel, Compensation and Governance Committee and the Finance, Audit and Investment Committee. The former assists the board in evaluating the performance of and determining the appropriate compensation for the president, and advises the president on performance and compensation for executive officers. The latter committee focuses on the University's internal controls, financial reporting, investment policies and practices. More Stories
