Shorter ally session implemented

A one-day 6-hour pilot program session on being an ally to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community was facilitated recently by the Office of LGBT Affairs at the College of Engineering. The program is designed specifically for faculty and staff who may not be able to find time for the standard 8-hour session spread over two days. There were 28 participants including Tony England, associate dean for academic affairs, College of Engineering; Cinda-Sue Davis, coordinator, Women in Science and Engineering; and Cindy Finelli, managing director, Center for Research on Learning and Teaching North and associate research scientist, engineering education. Participants strengthen their ability to serve as allies to LGBT students, staff, and faculty. Those who complete training can display the ally logo to show they support the right of LGBT people to fair and equal treatment, and that one can turn to them for support or information about LGBT people and issues. For more information go to www.umich.edu/~lgbta/allies.html.

M18 parking structure repairs close spaces

Sections of the M18 Parking Structure serving the Taubman Health Care Center and University Hospital area are closed to allow structure repair work through mid August. To better ensure sufficient patient and visitor parking, University staff, except those in special M18 parking programs, are asked not to park in M18 during construction. The structure will remain open during the project, but spaces will be closed with barricades and barriers. Temporary traffic and parking signs will be posted to help patients and visitors find parking. The project work will be performed in phases throughout the north end and west bay of levels 2, 2a and 3.

Cashier's Office changes ahead

The Associate Vice President for Finance organization has leveraged technology to achieve efficiencies and enhance customer service for student payments and departmental deposits. Improvements and conveniences, such as online payment options for tuition and fees, web-based cash receipt tickets, deposit stations across campus, improved departmental reporting and faster bank deposits, have reduced demand for the services of the North and Central Campus Cashier's offices. Effective Aug. 1, essential services provided by the North Campus office—petty cash reimbursement and travel/hosting advance services—will be shifted to the U-M Credit Union in Pierpont Commons. In winter 2008, the Central Campus Cashier's Office will consolidate with the Student Financial Operations Office. For more information, contact Cheryl Soper, controller and director of financial operations.
