Michigan, like many states, has a proposal before the Legislature that, if passed, requires all girls entering the sixth grade in fall 2007 to be vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer, which is acquired primarily by sexual contact with an infected person, and it is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. Faculty experts, political leaders, clinicians and community members will come together at 7-8:30 p.m. March 14 at the Ann Arbor District Library to examine this issue from political, economic, social and ethical perspectives. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Timothy R. B. Johnson, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and chair and professor of obstetrics and gynecology. The forum is co-sponsored by the President's Ethics in Public Life Initiative, the U-M-Global Health Research and Training Initiative with funding from the National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center and the Ann Arbor District Library.
