U. urges: Drive safely this work week

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Parking and Transportation Services announce Drive Safely Work Week 2006. The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) sponsors this national campaign to promote safe driving practices for all employees. The goal of program, through Oct. 6, is to emphasize the importance of driving safely on and off the job to eliminate preventable crashes.

One of every five drivers in America is involved in a roadway crash each year. Last year, more than 43,000 people were killed in traffic crashes and almost 3 million were injured, according to NETS.

Driving is an everyday activity for most adults, and on a college campus highly traveled by pedestrians, some clashes between drivers and pedestrians or bicyclists take place. This week and every week, University officials encourage drivers to be fully prepared when they get behind the wheel, remember that pedestrians often have the right of way and reduce speed.

Mott project impacts bus routes

Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) routes 4, 9U, 12UM, 12UL and 14 will be moved to Washington Heights and no longer will serve the bus stop at U-M Hospital Lot M26, effective Oct. 5. The lot and bus stop will be removed to make way for construction of the new Mott Hospital. The University will improve the existing stop on East Medical Center Drive to serve the altered routes as well as routes 1U and 2, which will not be changed, according to AATA. As of Oct. 1 a portion of Route 4-Washtenaw on trips into downtown Ann Arbor was rerouted. It will turn off Huron, left onto State Street, right onto Washington Street, then left onto Fifth Avenue to complete its trip to the Blake Transit Center. The bus stop in front of the Campus Inn no longer will be served by Route 4. Two stops—one on State and one on Washington—will be served by the new routing.

Health Care information sessions

Five information sessions have been scheduled for faculty, staff and retirees who have questions about health care benefits following the recent announcement of the sale of M-CARE. Sessions will be held on the Ann Arbor (Central and North), Dearborn and Flint campuses and in the U-M Health System. For times and specific locations go to www.umich.edu/~benefits/new/mcareinfo.htm.
