Community Assistance Directory: Celebrating 10 Years of Outreach

In 1996 the Office of Government Relations launched a Web site designed to showcase the outreach and research projects of the various schools and colleges that comprise the University.

Under the direction of Vice President Cynthia Wilbanks and now-retired Director of State Outreach Lew Morrisey, the site was innovative in its purpose and scope.

The purpose of the Web site—called the Community Assistance Directory (CAD)—was to make useful information easily available to both the general public and professionals in the state of Michigan such as teachers, school administrators, city managers, legislators and others while raising the visibility of U-M activities throughout the state.

Now 10 years later, the site is used by thousands of people each year and provides easy access to hundreds of outreach and research projects. Contact names are available through the information provided on each entry, as well as a link to individual Web sites relating to each project.

As a thank you for 10 years of support from the University family and the public, the CAD is having a birthday contest. The prize will be a cake-and-ice-cream party for a U-M office or department. The contest will run Oct. 17-27.

There will be two ways to win a party for a department. First is the CAD trivia question contest. A new trivia question will be posted on the Web site each day for two weeks during the contest. The first department to send a correct answer each day will get one point. The department with the most points at the end will win a birthday party of cake and ice cream hosted by Government Relations staff.

The other way to win a party is simply to add a unit's qualified outreach, research or service projects to the CAD. The entry form can be accessed from the main page of the directory. The "submit program" button leads to a short entry form. Entry guidelines are also available from this page. The department with the most new (qualified) entries also will win a birthday party.

Additional contest details are available on the Web site, www.state.outreach.umich.edu.
