News BriefsCheck your password when you change clocksTo protect privacy and security, Information Technology Central Services (ITCS) recommends that faculty and staff check their Kerberos password for security once every six months. When changing clocks for the end of daylight-saving time Oct. 29, passwords can be checked by answering the questions in the ITCS Password Security Checklist at www.itcs.umich.edu/your-account/passwordchecklist.html. Memorial to honor former disability council chair and assistant registrar The University's Council for Disability Concerns (CFDC) is honoring its former chair, the late Edward Loyer, with a memorial ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 27 in Forum Hall at Palmer Commons. Light refreshments will be served beginning at 9:30. "Ed's unflagging commitment and leadership made the University of Michigan dramatically more accessible to persons with disabilities,"U+00C2U+00A0says Jack Bernard, chair of the University Council for Disability Concerns. "Ed worked for the University for almost 40 years and was among the most affable people in the community." Loyer chaired the CFDC for 18 years and served as assistant university registrar at the time of his death last fall. Colleagues say he championed the University's efforts to go beyond mere compliance with the law to create an environment where people with disabilities would feel welcomed to study, teach, research, work and visit. Call for Distinguished Dissertation nominations Nominations for the annual Distinguished Dissertation Awards competition are due by 5 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Nominees must have been awarded or be on track to receive a doctoral degree during the 2006 calendar year. The awards, which include a $1,000 honorarium, recognize exceptional and unusually interesting work produced by doctoral students during the last phase of their graduate work.
