U-M program supports women returning to college

Women who have experienced an interruption in their education and wish to return to U-M to earn an undergraduate, graduate or professional degree may be eligible for help from the Center for the Education of Women (CEW).

Applications for the 2007-08 CEW Scholarships now are available. The interruption must be for at least 48 consecutive months, or can total 50 months, excluding interruptions of less than eight months. This gap in education may have taken place at any point, for instance, between high school and community college prior to attending U-M.

Women who currently are enrolled or will be attending any of the three U-M campuses during the 2007-08 academic year are eligible. Applications may be downloaded at www.cew.umich.edu and also are available at CEW, 330 E. Liberty, Ann Arbor, 998-7080. All CEW scholarships are privately funded. Completed applications are due Jan. 8.

The CEW Scholarship Program for returning women students was established in 1970 to recognize and support the academic performance and potential of women who have experienced significant interruptions in their education. Awards are based on strength of motivation, promise of impact in a chosen field, academic record and creative and scholarly contribution. The past year's recipients had interruptions in education ranging from four-30 years; their ages ranged from 25-53.
