Photo: Champion of science

U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz (R-Battle Creek, third from left) was honored at a luncheon last week for his support of science and research. President Mary Sue Coleman presented Schwarz with the "Champion of Science" award for his work in Congress. The honor was given on behalf of The Science Coalition, a group of 64 universities that works to advocate for increased federal funding of basic research. U-M, Michigan State, Wayne State and Michigan Tech all are members of the coalition. Coleman singled out Schwarz's support for stem cell research and science and math education. U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Dearborn) also was on hand for the presentation at Pierpont Commons. Schwarz is a member of the House Science Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. Pictured with Schwarz are Coleman, Vice President for Research Steve Forrest and MSU Vice President for Government Relations Steve Webster. (Photo by Paul Jaronski, U-M Photo Services)
