Panel will challenge assumptions about the uninsured

About 47 million people in America are uninsured. As part of Cover the Uninsured Week, a panel discussion sponsored by the Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation (CHRT) will address what can be done to remedy this dilemma.

The event is planned from noon-2 p.m. May 2 in the Danto Auditorium at the Cardiovascular Center. Panel members include Catherine McLaughlin, professor of health management and policy, and director of the Economic Research Initiative on the Uninsured, School of Public Health; Marianne Udow-Phillips, director of CHRT; Kevin Seitz, executive vice president of Health Care Value Enhancement, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan; and Ellen Rabinowitz, executive director of the Washtenaw Health Plan. Tracy Davis of the Ann Arbor News will moderate the discussion.

Numerous studies have documented how being uninsured leads to worse health status and contributes to a greater burden on society. Health care accounts for nearly one-sixth of the U.S. economy, and a recent study by Families USA found that nearly two working-age Michiganders die each day due to lack of health insurance.
