U-M honor society to host first initiation since 2004

For the first time in four years, the U-M chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society will have an initiation ceremony April 1.

The chapter, which has a new slate of officers, also will grant chapter scholarships and awards to its members.

The University was granted a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society, in 1926. Since that time, more than 8,000 students who met the high academic standards of the organization have been initiated at U-M.

"Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is recognition of an individual's academic achievements. It is a wonderful honor to receive and for that reason alone we are delighted that the University of Michigan chapter is active again," says Provost and Phi Kappa Phi member Teresa Sullivan. "Equally important, I think, are the opportunities for life-long learning, service and connections with others that Phi Kappa Phi provides. I am confident U-M members will benefit from and make important contributions to Phi Kappa Phi in the years to come."

Serving as U-M chapter officers are Norman Andresen, president; Cecilia Sauter, secretary; Provost Sullivan, treasurer; Mary Beth Donovan, public relations coordinator; Karen and Jim Schaefer, scholarships and awards coordinators; and Shelley Strickland, graduate student vice president.
