TV, football star Tiki Barber to give MLK talk on character

Former NFL star and current NBC correspondent Tiki Barber will deliver the Ross School of Business Martin Luther King Jr. Day lecture at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at Rackham Auditorium.

Barber's talk, "Character Isn't an Audible: Growth with Integrity," will focus on the former New York Giant's life after football and how he has adopted the principles espoused by King. The lecture is free to the public and no tickets are required.

"We are extremely pleased and honored that Tiki Barber will join us for the Ross School's MLK Day celebration this year," says Robert Dolan, dean of the Ross School of Business. "Tiki's record of leadership and accomplishment on the football field has long been recognized. Even during his career, though, he has worked to have a positive impact on society. Now, as he focuses more on the business world, his concern for society is evident in his initiatives."

Barber enjoyed a 10-year, Hall-of-Fame-caliber career as a running back for the Giants, retiring after the 2006 season. He then joined NBC in early 2007 as a correspondent for the "Today" show and as an analyst for "Football Night in America." He also co-hosts a satellite radio program, "The Barber Shop," with his twin brother, Ronde.

In addition to his former career on the gridiron and his current work in broadcasting, Barber devotes considerable time to community service. He is a staunch supporter of literacy campaigns, and has co-authored with his brother four successful children's books and is under contract to write three young-adult novels.

Barber recently launched Tiki Ventures, which pursues business opportunities in real estate, entertainment, sports marketing and media, with an emphasis on giving back through community involvement, humanitarian aid and educational programs that benefit the economically disadvantaged.

Last month he announced a partnership between Tiki Ventures and The Related Companies to develop high-quality, affordable housing throughout the United States. Related was founded and is headed by Ross School benefactor Stephen M. Ross.
