National center seeks diversity project proposals

The National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) is calling for proposals from those interested in becoming faculty fellows, center fellows or organizers of events that incorporate innovative conversations about diversity.

The NCID, established in May 2005, works to address the challenges and opportunities of diversity through innovative scholarship that engages the U-M campus, as well as state, national and international communities. Its core priorities and activities examine diversity in the broadest, richest sense — including racial, ethnic, gender, class, geographic, age, cultural and diversity of viewpoints.

"The NCID is particularly interested in proposals that will enable it to develop or deepen strategic partnerships with campus units and external institutions," says Phillip Bowman, director of the NCID. "In line with the NCID's mission, we want to support projects with strong potential for becoming national exemplars via their innovation, impact, sustainability and replicability."

Applicants have until March 26 to complete an RFP for the 2008-09 cycle. More information is available at www.ncid.umich.edu.

The center is looking for individuals or projects meeting the following criteria:

• Faculty Fellowship: U-M faculty with an extensive record of research, practice and/or teaching related to diversity and who wish to spend one year working on faculty-defined projects related to the mission of the NCID are eligible. Up to four fellow positions will be awarded, with the recognition that some projects will be in the embryonic planning stages and others ready for implementation, data gathering and analysis, or other creative activity. Applicants are encouraged to employ a team approach, including graduate or undergraduate students, U-M staff and/or external partners. Each fellowship will be one year in length, beginning in the summer 2008 and ending on June 30, 2009.

• Diversity Conversations: The NCID seeks innovative conversations on diversity to occur within a conference, colloquium, forum, lecture series, retreat, seminar, workshop or similar gathering. The initiative provides funding of $15,000-$35,000 to teams of faculty and staff who design and organize an event that prepares people for active engagement in a diverse society, and that works toward building productive, inclusive communities at the University and beyond. The event must be enacted by June 30, 2009.

• Center Fellows: External partners or community practitioners who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to the NCID mission as policy experts, leaders within major social institutions, artists, grassroots community organizers or directors of non-profit organizations are eligible. Ideal candidates will collaborate with a U-M colleague on an innovative project that advances the mission of the center. Candidates may self-nominate or be nominated by a U-M faculty member. Fellowships will begin no earlier than the summer of 2008 and end no later than June 30, 2009.

"We look forward to building upon the NCID's tradition of funding exemplary diversity endeavors around several core priority areas, most recently including projects relevant to diversity issues in STEM, health disparities, urban revitalization, and the arts, among others," Bowman says.
