Photo: Transplant/Survival Flight memorial

Steven Ball, a carillonneur and graduate student instructor, will ring the bell at Burton Tower as the U-M Health System observes the one-year anniversary of the Transplant/Survival Flight team tragedy. In June 2007 six members of the Transplant/Survival Flight team died in a plane crash while transporting procured organs from Milwaukee. A reception is set from 1-3 p.m. June 4 in the Towsley Center lobby on the Medical Campus. Dr. Robert Kelch, executive vice president for medical affairs, will provide brief remarks. The reception will continue with light refreshments, and time for reflection and viewing memorial items. It is open to all UMHS and U-M employees, as well as families of the crew and other special guests. At 5 p.m., the time of the crash, the School of Music has arranged a simultaneous bell ringing by all carillons in Ann Arbor. Bells will sound for a period of six minutes in memory of the six flight team members who died: David Ashburn, Richard Chenault II, Dennis Hoyes, Ricky LaPensee, Bill Serra and Martin Spoor.
