President, business leader, hospital CEO to lead campaignThis year's U-M campaign to support the Washtenaw United Way will be conducted over a compact, four week period with the goal of uniting the University and the community behind a shared purpose: to alleviate the difficult times being experienced by greater numbers of community residents. President Mary Sue Coleman is serving as co-chair of the Washtenaw United Way Campaign with McKinley Associates CEO, Albert Berriz. She also is co-chair, with U-M Hospitals and Health Centers CEO Doug Strong, of the University's campaign. Together Coleman and Strong are committed to bringing renewed enthusiasm for campus-wide support of community agencies. With the closing of a number of area businesses and downsizing by companies in the community, they say the needs are growing for those programs supported by the United Way. "This year will challenge the University of Michigan and the Washtenaw County community like never before," Coleman says. "Together, our contributions and volunteer service make a difference in the lives of so many. The agencies are counting on the generosity of the U-M community as they work to see that no one in need is turned away." To achieve its United Way goal, the University will conduct a shorter, more focused campaign for faculty and staff. The kickoff date is Oct. 22 and solicitation will end Nov. 22. The payroll deduction method available through Wolverine Access is accessible now and will remain open until Dec. 31. Faculty and staff are asked to consider giving for the first time or increasing their contributions this year to help meet the additional needs.
