Photos: SSW celebrates 50 years

Frances Fox Piven, top right, distinguished professor of sociology and political science at City University of New York, interacts with students and alumni, above, at the School of Social Work. She was the keynote speaker Oct. 12 for the Joint Doctoral Program in Social Work and Social Science 50th anniversary celebration. In 1957 the program offered joint doctorate degrees in social work and three social sciences: economics, psychology and sociology. In 1966 political science was added, and in 1981 anthropology. SSW Dean Paula Allen-Meares, the Norma Radin Collegiate Professor of Social Work and professor of education, bottom right, said the Joint Doctoral Program was the first of its kind in the nation, and several colleges and universities have used it as a template to create other joint programs. She added that alumni hold important intellectual leadership positions around the globe. Photos by Scott Galvin, U-M Photo Services.
