EEBlog: Primordial Soup is a new blog presented by the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, at It is presented as a random collection of experiences, ponderings, ideas and more from graduate students in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University designed to inform and entertain. Prospective and current graduate students are invited to post comments and ask questions, but anyone who is interested is welcome to post a comment. New posts are presented weekly.

CEW scholarship applications available

Applications for the 2008-09 Center for the Education of Women scholarships are now available. Completed applications are due Jan. 7. Awards are given at the graduate, professional and undergraduate levels to students whose educations have been interrupted. The interruption in education must be for at least 48 consecutive months, or a total of 50 months, excluding interruptions of less than eight months. This gap in education may have taken place at any point. Students currently enrolled or who will attend any of the three U-M campuses during the 2008-09 academic year are eligible. Applications may be downloaded at, and are also available at CEW, 330 E. Liberty, 764-7271. All CEW scholarships are privately funded.

Pilot and Collaborative Grant Program applications sought

As part of the National Institutes of Health Roadmap Clinical and Translational Sciences Award, several partnering University departments, schools, centers and institutes are announcing a funding opportunity to encourage and support clinical translational research. The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research is seeking applications for the Pilot and Collaborative Grant Program through Dec. 3. Proposals are solicited from basic and clinical scientists to promote development of transformative solutions for improving patient outcomes. For more information call (734) 998-6885 or go to

Award nominations sought

The Academic Women's Caucus (AWC) is seeking nominations for the 2008 Sarah Goddard Power Award and the Distinguished Service Award. The awards are presented annually to individuals who have distinguished themselves through leadership, scholarship and sustained service on behalf of women. The deadline for nominations is Nov. 19. The award ceremony is at 4 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Michigan League. Eligible candidates for the Power Award include any faculty member including instructors, lecturers, primary researchers, curators and senior administrative staff. Faculty members who no longer are employed by the University but held an appointment within the year prior to nomination are eligible. For more information go to or call 763-7621.
