Report: University ranks high among top collegesThe University again made a strong showing with its peers by remaining in the top 3 among public universities in the latest U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" rankings released Aug. 17. U-M and UCLA tied for 3rd with University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Virginia claiming the top two spots. U-M and UCLA also were tied for 25th among all national universities that grant doctoral degrees. Princeton University headed that list. The undergraduate program at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business repeated its ranking of 3rd nationally, again tied with U.C., Berkeley, and kept its top five ranking in five specialties: another year at number one in management, accounting (5th), finance (4th), international business (4th) and marketing (2nd). The College of Engineering (CoE) undergraduate was ranked 7th nationally, tied with Cornell. In specialty rankings, CoE retained its top five ranking in six specialty areas: aerospace/aeronautical/astronomical (3rd); electrical/electronic/communications (5th); environment/environmental health (tie for 3rd with Illinois-Urbana-Champaign); industrial/manufacturing (2nd, up from 3rd last year); materials (tied for 3rd with MIT, up from 4th last year) and mechanical (4th). And CoE cracked the top five in the Engineering Science/Engineering Physics category at 5th. U-M again was recognized in the "Programs to Look For" category, including new recognition in the First Year Experience category, which joined multi-year recognition for undergraduate research/creative projects, learning communities and service learning.
