Don't Miss: Climate change is topic of Francis Lecture

Global health expert Dr. Anthony McMichael, director of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, Australian National University, Canberra, and a professor, will present the 34th annual Thomas Francis Jr. Memorial Lecture at 3 p.m. Sept. 12 in Lane Family Auditorium, School of Public Health, Room 1690 (SPH Tower).

The University community and the public are invited to attend. A reception in Room 1680 will follow.

McMichael's scheduled talk, "Back to the Future: Epidemiological Research in an Era of Climate and Environmental Change," is intended to reflect his dedication for developing research strategies and risk-forecasting methods for the health impacts of climate change.

The Francis Lecture was established in 1970 to honor Dr. Thomas Francis Jr., the first chair of the Epidemiology Department. He was internationally known for his commitment to public health, in part due to his historic role in evaluating the Salk polio vaccine.

In 1955 Francis made the announcement at Rackham Auditorium with Dr. Jonas Salk about the success of the vaccine. Salk had developed it with his research team at the University of Pittsburgh, and Francis had designed and led a nationwide field trial to test the vaccine. Salk had been a postdoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Francis at the School of Public Health.
