MHealthy offers free fitness assessments, gym discounts

Recognizing the role good health plays in reducing stress, improving mood and increasing productivity, Michigan Healthy Community is launching two new programs to encourage health and fitness — free fall fitness assessments and fitness center discounts at area facilities.

From Sept. 26 to Nov. 16, faculty, staff and graduate students are eligible for a free fitness check designed to assess physical fitness data, such as blood pressure, body mass index, lower body flexibility, waist circumference and resting heart rate. The check also includes a three-minute step test.

The "Fitness Is For Every Body! Fall Fitness Maintenance Checks" take 20-30 minutes and will be offered at locations on all three campuses and the U-M Health System. Each appointment includes confidential, one-on-one coaching about individual fitness levels, and take-home resources to help improve or maintain overall physical health.

"I am very excited that the University is able to offer all of us this opportunity," says Dr. Robert Winfield, chief health officer. "I encourage everyone to take ownership of their own well-being and set up an appointment. The information you receive can benefit you for the rest of your life."

Registration begins today (Sept. 17) and continues until all appointment times are filled. Appointment dates, locations and registration information are available on the MHealthy Web site, www.MHealthy.umich.edu. Questions can be directed to (734) 975-3023 or mhealthy@umich.edu.

"After completing a fitness assessment, the best next step is to identify a reasonable health and fitness goal that fits what you think you can achieve, and then go for it," Winfield says.

MHealthy's new fitness center discount program offers all MCard holders a discount of at least 10 percent off regular membership rates at participating workout facilities.

"Our goal is to promote physical activity and healthy behaviors at work and at home," Winfield says. "U-M fitness centers are affordable and convenient for most of our community but we're also encouraging physical activity away from work by partnering with area gyms that may be closer to home, more conveniently located or better suited to individual exercise regimens."

A complete list of participating fitness centers and gyms is located on the MCard discounts Web site, www.mcard.umich.edu/discountsfacultygyms.htm.
