AATA to require faculty, staff, students to swipe Mcards

The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) is updating technology with the installation of new fare boxes on its fixed-route buses.

Since 2004 the University pays the fare for eligible students, faculty members and staff to ride AATA fixed-route service. Under the MRide agreement, only current yellow Mcards will be accepted on AATA bus service.

Starting Feb. 16, all Mcard holders will be required to swipe their Mcard through the fare box reader. If a card cannot be read due to damage or expiration, cardholders will need to obtain a new Mcard. There will be a one-month grace period to allow time for faculty, staff and students to obtain a new Mcard, if necessary.

The new fare boxes will read only the ID number and the expiration date of an Mcard and will not collect personal data. In the future, the fare box data may be used by the University to compile aggregate statistical data such as ridership according to student, faculty or staff categories; ridership by day of the week and/or time of day; ridership by AATA route; and the number of unique cards used on AATA's service.

Starting March 16, Mcards that have expired or are damaged will no longer be accepted, and riders will be required to pay the $1 cash fare when boarding.

To obtain a new Mcard, cardholders may go to an Mcard office. Mcard offices are located on the first floor of Wolverine Tower, the Student Activities Building, Pierpont Commons (Housing Business Services, lower level), Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB, Business Office) and, for UMHS staff, the MedInn Building (Key/ID Office).
