Accreditation on-site assessment complete

A team of out-of-state assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA) completed its on-site visit Feb. 4 to examine all aspects of Department of Public Safety policies, procedures, management, operations and support services.

The team has 60 days to complete their report and forward it to the Commission with their recommendation to approve or deny DPS's application for accreditation.

The assessment team's goal was to verify that the department meets the 460 CALEA professional standards by reviewing written materials, conducting interviews with department staff and University members, and visiting offices and other campus locations. As part of the visit, the team conducted a public session to hear comments from community and department members. Three people spoke at the public session, all providing examples supporting their position that DPS should be granted accreditation. Additionally, six people gave the assessors input during the public call-in session.

If DPS receives the CALEA accreditation, it will be the first law enforcement agency in the Big Ten to receive this designation and the 13th agency of the 607 police agencies in the state of Michigan currently to be accredited.

For more information regarding the CALEA visit go to www.calea.org, write the commission at 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2215. or call (800) 368-3757 or (703) 352-4225.
