Awards
Joel Smoller, the Lamberto Cesari Collegiate Professor of Mathematics, has received the George David Birkhoff Prize. The prize is awarded jointly by the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics once every three years to recognize an outstanding contribution to "applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense." Smoller was cited for his leadership, originality, depth and breadth of work in dynamical systems, differential equations, mathematical biology, shock wave theory and general relativity.

Alyssa Marks, a graduate student in the School of Social Work, has been selected to receive a $1,000 Michigan Campus Compact Carter Academic-Service Entrepreneur grant, provided by the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation and sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The grant program provides funding to establish or significantly further a partnership between a college student and a community nonprofit organization. Marks is working with the Communities in Schools and the Detroit Parent Network, coordinating and administering classes to parents of students who attend Butzel Elementary and Middle Schools in Detroit.

Walter Weber Jr., the Gordon M. Fair and Earnest Boyce Distinguished University Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, was honored in November during the Centennial Anniversary Celebration of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in Philadelphia. Weber was recognized as one of 100 individuals who significantly shaped and influenced the direction of chemical engineering during the Modern Era following World War II. Weber was particularly recognized for outstanding achievements in advancing the fundamentals and applications of ChE.
