U-M launches United Way 2008 campaign

In many neighborhoods, one can see evidence of recent economic strife in the large numbers of "For Sale" signs that line the street. What is not as visible are the hundreds and thousands of families, children and households disrupted or otherwise in peril due to the broader economic circumstances facing Michigan.

In this context, University United Way Campaign co-chairs Teresa Sullivan, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and Doug Strong, director and chief executive officer of U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, announce that U-M once again is partnering with the Washtenaw County agency.

"The United Way campaign demonstrates the strong connection between the University and the community," Sullivan says. "This year many in our community face hardship. Gifts to United Way — large or small — will provide much needed assistance to them."

The theme for the campaign is Live United, which calls the University to action, to stand together with the community. Similar to the campaign last year, the 2008 goal has been set for $1 million.

"This year our pledges to United Way are especially important, to support the community agencies that provide assistance to those in need," Strong says. "Our giving will help to ensure that those needing shelter, food assistance and medical care will receive it."

The campaign begins today (Oct. 27) and will continue through Nov. 28. University employees can make campaign gifts either by using the pledge card sent through campus mail or contributing via payroll deduction using Wolverine Access.
