Incident at Michigan Union results in arrest

A 47-year-old alumnus was arraigned Nov. 14 on one count of criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree, in connection with an incident Nov. 10 at the Michigan Union. A student told police that at about 12:30 a.m., as she was studying in a first-floor study area, an unknown man who was sitting next to her kept moving closer to her and ultimately forcibly fondled her buttocks. She grabbed her belongings and went to the Campus Information Center desk to notify police.

At his arraignment, Terrence Cato was released on personal recognizance bond and told not to have any contact with the complainant nor appear on campus property. His preliminary exam is scheduled for Jan. 13.

As a result of the arrest, the Department of Public Safety Crime Alert #21 was canceled. Of the 21 crime alerts issued to date in 2009, seven were for incidents reported to have occurred on campus property (as opposed to off campus in the Ann Arbor Police Department's jurisdiction). Of those seven, four have been canceled due to arrests.

Hospital patient reports assault

A University Hospital patient told his wife and nurse that he was sexually assaulted by a staff person earlier in his hospital stay. The police investigation continues.

Sexual assault reported at residence hall

On Nov. 22 a student told staff at the University Hospital Emergency Room that she had been sexually assaulted by another student, whom she knew. The two had been to an off-campus party Nov. 20 and returned to his residence hall room, where the assault was reported to have occurred early the next morning. The case has been closed because the student does not wish to press charges.
