CARMEL wins magazine’s ‘Best of What’s New’ Award

CARMEL, the U-M robot that won first place in a national robotics competition last summer, has been chosen by the editors of Popular Science magazine to receive a “Best of What’s New” award for 1992.

The “Best of What’s New” is an annual selection of the year’s 100 top products, technologies and scientific achievements as determined by Popular Science editors. CARMEL will be featured, along with other award winners, in the magazine’s December issue.

Engineering students David Kortenkamp, Ulrich Raschke, Frank Koss and Clare Congdon—members of the student robotics team that developed new computer, vision and speech capabilities for CARMEL—accepted the award at a ceremony in New York City Nov. 10.
