Peace Corps director will be here Oct. 12

Peace Corps Director Carol Bellamy will visit the University on Oct. 12. Bellamy, who was appointed to head the Peace Corps in 1993, is the first returned Peace Corps volunteer to lead the agency in its 33-year history. She was a volunteer in Guatemala in 1963–65.

Bellamy’s schedule on campus:

10 a.m.—Bellamy will discuss “The Peace Corps and AIDS Education: Combatting an International Epidemic” in Auditorium II, School of Public Health.

Noon—Bellamy will speak on “The Peace Corps in 1960–1994: Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going” in the Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union.

2 p.m.—Bellamy will discuss “The Environment: Taking Global Responsibility” in Room 10446, School of Natural Resources and Environment.

An attorney and former fellow of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, Bellamy was managing director in the Public Finance Department at Bear Stearns & Co. in 1990–93 and served as chair of Sloate, Weisman, Bear Stearns Capital Management Inc.

Bellamy also has served in the public sector, including four years in the New York State Senate and as president of the New York City Council.
